Report on the XII International Congress of Forum Herbulot: “Accelerating Biodiversity Research in the Southern Hemisphere”

We are pleased to share a detailed account of the recently concluded XII International Congress of Forum Herbulot, an event that significantly advanced biodiversity research initiatives, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. Held from the 27th to the 31st of January 2025, this congress was hosted at The Conclave Country Lodge, a picturesque venue located near Pretoria, South Africa. This gathering served as a melting pot of ideas and discussions centered on biodiversity research on the supoerfamily Geometroidea, with a keen focus on the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Southern Hemisphere.
The congress brought together a group of 23 dedicated participants from around the globe, each contributing their expertise and perspective to the overarching theme of the event. True to the spirit of scientific collaboration and exchange, a total of 23 talks were presented. These presentations covered a wide array of topics, each shedding light on various aspects of biodiversity research, from taxonomic studies to conservation strategies and technological advancements in the field. Each session was designed to provoke thoughtful dialogue and inspire innovative solutions among attendees.
Beyond the formal presentations, the congress also offered attendees ample opportunities for informal interactions and networking. Social events were organized throughout the duration of the congress, providing participants with the chance to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones in a relaxed and congenial setting.
One of the highlights of the congress was the nightly light trapping sessions. These hands-on activities allowed participants to engage directly with local biodiversity and apply theoretical insights in a practical setting. The light trapping sessions not only served an educational purpose but also enhanced camaraderie among the attendees, as they worked alongside one another in pursuit of common scientific goals.
At the conclusion of this successful event, Pasi Sihvonen extended a warm invitation to all participants to join the upcoming XIII International Congress of Forum Herbulot. This next gathering is scheduled to be held from the 29th of June to the 2nd of July 2026 in Finland. The announcement was met with enthusiasm, and participants expressed keen interest in continuing their collaborative efforts and discussions in Finland.
Overall, the XII International Congress of Forum Herbulot was a resounding success. It set a benchmark for future conferences by fostering a collaborative environment conducive to impactful research and networking. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions and enthusiasm, which were central to the success of the event.
We look forward to seeing how the ideas exchanged and connections made during this congress will translate into meaningful advances in biodiversity research, both in the Southern Hemisphere and beyond.
